Lens placode cells contact the underlying optic vesicle and invaginate simultaneously to give rise to the lens pit and optic cup respectively. The lens pit subsequently detaches from the overlying ectoderm, creating a hollow lens vesicle containing lens vesicle precursor cells. The overlying ectoderm develops into the other anterior structures including the corneal, limbus and conjunctiva epithelium and the eyelid.
