Bulge stem cells form during embryonic morphogenesis and reside in the outer root sheath (ORS) layer of the hair. These cells are quiescent, have a low proliferation capacity, and serve as a pool for regeneration of the hair follicle during the anagen phase. In addition, these cells can repopulate the sebaceous gland and interfollicular epidermis following injury.
