Early sebocytes are proliferating cells situated along the border of the basal membrane. The first sebocytes are detected at stage 5 of hair follicle development. These cells are produced when sebocyte progenitor cells cease to express Blimp1, the gene responsible for maintaining the undifferentiated progenitor state.
